I forget - who is Jack?
And who organizes all these wonderful community festivals? It makes me want to visit. you all seem to have at least one a month.
@coffeeiv - Well, it's a bit difficult to say exactly WHO Jack is, Wikipedia has some stuff and googling brings up quite a lot of results. Perhaps I need to find an answer myself for the next blog somehow!
The events around here tend to be independently organised, there are all in the summer months and we don't go to them all by any means. There's a lot of historical societies which stage them at castles and such places which are geared up to catering for crowds and welcome the extra income.
@coffeeiv -I should have added this quote: "The Jack in The Green was accompanied down the hill and onto the stage where he was ceremonially dismembered to release the spirit of summer from beneath his greenery. The leaves from his covering were then distributed to the eager crowd so they could take home a little bit of the Jack to ensure their own good fortune for the year to come."
